The light inside the 19th Century Hotel Potocki with its ornate gilt, painted walls and ceilings and shimmering chandeliers had definitely been calibrated to ensure our snaps were super clear.
From behind Gigi came the rest of the Olivier Rousteing Balmain Army - some, not all, in an array of more wigs, including Karlie Kloss and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Lily Donaldson and Jourdan Dunn, all in soft suede thigh-high boots or brass buckled high heels, with tiny waists corseted or cinched by wide shiny gold belts. This was all matched with lashings of lace, cascading ruffles and shredded mink fur. Mini crinoline skirts (mini crinis), lavishly embellished fringed mini dresses and striped body suits also helped conjure the decadence of the court of Versailles.
No room for an inch of spare flesh here - everything clung provocatively (it's enough to send a shiver of fear down the spine of anyone over 21). But Rousteing’s clients are well-toned with access to the very best personal trainers. And their dry-cleaning bills are clearly of no consequence either, as the first half of this collection was of the most stain-worthy hues and fabrics: as well as powdery blue, there was pale lilac, mint green, dove grey and sugary pink soft suede, beaded silk and fluffy mohair cashmere. While the sheer body stocking dresses had the high octane sex appeal his fans love, the lace and silk ruffle trousers were challenging even for this new generation of models.
